Article #3
Taking good care of your pets is extremely important and knowing how to detect the symptoms is the first step towards helping them get better. If you notice that your cat has cold like symptoms such as runny eyes, sneezing and other symptoms associated to colds, your cat will most likely have a cold.
Some people are not aware of the fact that cats can also get colds so they tend to
ignore the symptoms, but taking care of your cat when it has a cold is important
in order to avoid a bad situation turning into a terrible one.
If your cat is sneezing it is normally a good sign which shows that your cat's body
is producing antibodies to fight back against a sickness. Of course having a sickness
like a cold is not a great thing, but as long as your cat's body is producing enough
antibodies, it will be fine.
This is why running noses are often associated with cats that sneeze. The sneezing
will actually be caused by the antibodies which cause the runny nose. Just like a
human who has a runny nose, they will be prone to sneezing. However, cats have a
tremendous sense of smell and this puts them at a higher risk of contracting colds.
Cat sneezing will normally go away on its own within a few days or weeks but if it
does not then it could be something more serious like cat leukemia.
Eyes are a fragile thing for humans but they are even more delicate on felines.
If your cat is experiencing eye troubles, it is important to take care of it immediately
before it worsens because cat eye problems can get bad real fast.
Knowing the symptoms of cat eye problems is also the first step towards taking action. The most immediate signals that a cat will show when their eye is irritating them is that they will have trouble opening it, they will constantly paw at it and the eyes may also be running with a yellow or greenish puss.
If the cat is really having trouble with their eyes you will have to flush the eyes
yourself. This can be done by gently pulling back the eyelids and flushing it water
two or three times a day.
Worrying about your cats is perfectly normal because you will want to make sure
that they are well. Worrying about a sneezing cat is not necessary though because
more often than not it will be nothing more than a small cold. This will normally
happen when the seasons change, more so during spring and fall. However, if you cat
is experiencing sneezes along with some of the other symptoms such as a runny nose
and watery eyes, you should probably keep a closer eye on them.
Some other signs to look for are in your cat's behaviour and if they have begun acting
differently since they symptoms appeared. For example, if your cat is never hungry
and has almost no energy, your cat might be experiencing a more serious illness.
If the cat is also wheezing and has trouble breathing it could be an upper respiratory
infection which would require treatment by a professional.
In the end it is important
to watch out for signs of illness from your cat but the act of worrying is not necessary
for simple sneezing. If your cat only has a runny nose accompanied with sneezes but
remains active there is almost nothing to worry about. Pay attention to the way your
cat behaves and you will be able to tell whether or not it is anything serious by
checking for the above mentioned symptoms.
